EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS BILL

The Employment Rights Bill is a proposed law that will introduce a wide range of new rights and protections for workers in the UK. It aims to modernise outdated employment laws, tackle unfair practices like zero-hour contracts and fire-and-rehire, and ensure that all workers—regardless of job type or income—have stronger rights from day one of employment. The Bill will also improve how workplace rules are enforced, making it easier for workers to get support and take action when their rights are violated.

Key Protections for Workers:

  • Unfair Dismissal Protection from Day One: No more waiting two years to be eligible.

  • Zero-Hour Contracts Reformed: Workers will gain the right to guaranteed hours and compensation for last-minute shift cancellations.

  • Fire and Rehire Ban: Dismissals to force contract changes will be considered automatically unfair (except in emergencies).

  • Stronger Sick Pay: Removal of the earnings threshold and waiting days.

  • New Rights from Day One: Paternity leave, unpaid parental leave, and protection for pregnant and returning mothers.

  • Bereavement Leave: Unpaid time off after the loss of a loved one.

  • Tougher Anti-Harassment Rules: Employers must take all reasonable steps to prevent harassment—including by third parties.

  • Flexible Working: Employers must give clear, reasonable reasons if rejecting requests.

For Employers:

  • You’ll need to adapt recruitment, contracts, and HR policies in phases, starting in 2025 through 2027.

  • A new Fair Work Agency will have stronger enforcement powers, including for holiday pay, minimum wage, and agency rules.

This Bill is a major step toward a fairer, more modern workplace.
